Polar bears are getting thinner and having fewer cubs. Melting sea ice is to blame The impact of the climate crisis is becoming more and more obvious to humans and their animal neighbors. But among all species, polar bears might be some of the hardest hit. The bears rely on sea ice for nearly every aspect of their survival: It's where they hunt seals, travel, make dens and mate. So the earlier in the season the ice begins to melt, the less time they have to eat and procreate.

Tiger Woods hits supernatural 'Kobe Bryant' putt Supernatural or merely coincidence? Some might think there was a higher power at work when Tiger Woods strode down the first hole at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles Thursday. Close to where basketball great Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash last month, Woods fizzed his second shot into the green to leave an eagle putt of 24 feet eight inches. Remarkably, those are the two jersey numbers worn by Bryant during his glittering 20-year career with the LA Lakers. Of course, Woods made the putt. "It's ironic, isn't it?" Woods told the Golf Channel afterwards. "I didn't know about the putt being that long."

NRC online data go missing, authorities say cloud storage period expired GUWAHATI: The online data of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) showing details of included and excluded persons have suddenly disappeared from the NRC official website. The details were made available in the website in October last year on an order of the Supreme Court. Assam leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia on Tuesday sent a letter to Registrar General and Census Commissioner informing about the “mystery” of the “online data vanishing all of a sudden.”, “The data have vanished especially when appeals process has not even started due to the go-slow attitude adopted by the NRC Authority. There is, therefore, ample scope to suspect that the disappearance of online data is a mala fide act and is prima facie a deliberate violation of the directive issued by the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” Saikia wrote in his letter the registrar general. An official source at the NRC office said, “The data were stored...
CAA not against Muslims, says Rajinikanth CHENNAI: Actor Rajinikanth on Wednesday said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not against Muslims. If any Muslim is affected he will lead the protests, he said. "CAA is not against Muslims. Muslims will not be affected. If it affects them, I will come out and lead the protests," Rajinikanth told reporters outside his Poes Garden residence in Chennai. "Muslims cannot be sent away. Those Muslims, who wanted to go to Pakistan during partition, had left. Those, who believed this is their motherland, stayed back," Rajinikanth said. There is an attempt by some to create confusion, he added. "Some political parties are misleading people about CAA. Students should not allow themselves to be misguided by parties. They should fully understand an issue, before jumping into protests," he said. Rajinikanth said NPR is "essential" to check the presence of foreigners. "It was an exercise undertaken by ...
Those who raise anti-national slogans will be sent to jail: Amit Shah BHOPAL: Those who raise slogans against India will be sent behind bars, BJP president and Union home minister Amit Shah said at a rally in Jabalpur on Sunday, his first since CAA came into force. A ‘sky-high’ Ram Mandir will be built in Ayodhya in just four months, he announced. “Some students raised anti-India slogans, ‘Bharat tere tukde honge ek hazar, Inshallah Inshallah’ at JNU. Shouldn’t they be put in jail? Those who would raise anti-national slogans will be sent behind bars,” said Shah at the CAA outreach rally. The BJP chief challenged Congress to stop construction of Ram temple. “Should Ram temple be constructed or not? Congress leader and advocate Kapil Sibal said it should not be built. Sibal bhai, stop it if you can. A sky-high Ram temple is going to come up within the next four months.” Shah challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to point out a single p...
The Vengeful Polish Dentist I believed and was utterly horrified when I read the 2012 story (reported by several major news organizations) about a Polish dentist extracting every single one of her ex-boyfriend's teeth in a terrifying act of revenge. The story was originally published in the Daily Mail, and was complete with quotes from the supposedly toothless boyfriend. Polish authorities looked into the accusations laid forth in the Daily Mail's article, and determined that the entire story had been a fabrication.
How To Help People Affected By The Coronavirus Since December 2019, the spread of a new coronavirus originating in Wuhan, China, has had people all over the world taking extra precautions to protect themselves from the illness. Now meeting the criteria for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the outbreak has people worried about the ultimate devastation the virus will cause. On Feb. 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced an official name for the strain of the coronavirus: COVID-19, which stands for coronavirus disease 2019. The name change is an attempt to combat stigma and discrimination surrounding the virus since it was first identified in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, tweeted: "Under agreed guidelines between WHO, the @OIEAnimalHealth & @FAO, we had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronou...
Y2K This one is a classic. Amidst months of news reports that the start of the year 2000 would cause disastrous technology complications (and a rumor that a nuclear missile could launch accidentally), there were high levels of fear about the potential fallout from such problems. I have memories of footage that showed families stocking their pantries with months worth of food and bottled water, and filling up their bathtubs with water (in case the bottled water ran out? I'm not sure). There were educated speculations that war would break out between Russia and the U.S. People were nervous, and there was a very tense feeling in the air leading up to New Years.
The 1 Percent Tip In February 2012, when there was still quite a lot of heat surrounding Occupy Wall Street and contempt was high for the 1 percent, a story was released across several major news outlets that further incensed everyone who had already more than had it with the richest of the rich in the U.S. The story ran with an image that depicted a receipt from a lunch out at restaurant, with a 1 percent tip and a note saying "Get a real job!" The tip had reportedly been left by a bank executive, but it was later revealed by the restaurant that the image with the insultingly low tip had been doctored and was inaccurate.
